Handling an Estate at the County Courthouse
Because New City is the county seat, the Rockland County Surrogate's Court is right in town, in the courthouse at 1 South Main Street. If the owner left a will, the named executor files for probate and receives Letters Testamentary. If there was no will, a family member petitions for Letters of Administration. Those letters are what allow the estate to sign a contract and a deed.
